GOAL: Become a Model of Diversity Sensitivity

IDEAS FOR OBJECTIVES: 

Pledge to refrain from making stereotypical (“single story”) comments.

Be careful about humor; avoid ethnic jokes or any type of humor that demeans others. Confront others on this as well.

Get to know resources that support minority groups in the community and be ready to provide this info to others.

Realize that although African-Americans are the largest minority population in the U.S., and Hispanic-Americans are the largest minority population in Texas, there are other racial/cultural groups that may be represented in your group or organization.  Indeed, it may be that the minorities of lowest population deserve special attention. So, learn something about these “other” minorities and/or propose to do something specific to help members of those groups.

Be careful to avoid sexist language, and try to learn new inclusive terms and phrases.  Maybe list a few new terms, labels or phrases to start with.
